One of the few positive aspects of Mainz’s immediate post-war architecture (it’s pretty dire, utilitarian stuff – understandable, given the extent of the bombing damage and the pressing need to reconstruct and quickly) are the stuck-in-the 50’s time warp shop fronts.
“His and Hers” hairdresser in the Gaustrasse, complete with the attributes of the time – mock-bronze door and contemporary neon display and sign-writing.
The Gaustrasse is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance, with some loft development going on and funky shops and good restaurants popping up like mushrooms.
As long as they leave this place alone, I’ll be quite happy….
