The statue of the prototypical Mainz wine drinker graces the green patch between the Schönbornerhof and the Proviantamt.

The name is a portmanteau comprising “Schoppen” – the 0.4 litre cylindrical wine glass and “stechen” – as in “stick” your nose in a glass of wine.

Simply someone who regularly enjoys a glass of wine.
