This is the remains of the Roman Baths in Mainz, located in the park between the Maison de France and the Proviantamt – it’s been waymarked by some industrious person – and gives a good idea of how a hypocaust works.
Central furnace, raised floors, heat is transmitted through the channels and warms the floor to a cosy 25ºC.
