“If there was an Oscar for literary readings….

…they should win it” said the theatre critic in the Allgemeine Zeitung.

Actor Matthias Brandt is the youngest son of Willy Brandt, a former German chancellor instrumental in reconciling West Germany with the Soviet Bloc in the 1970s.

Jens Thomas is a pianist who creates the most surreal soundscapes on a grand piano.

They joined forces a few weeks ago at the Frankfurter Hof for a reading of Robert Bloch’s “Psycho”.

An hour and 20 minutes of riveting entertainment.

I sat there stunned for a minute at the end, before joining in for standing ovations [sic] (as they say around).

It started with Matthias Brandt playing a repetitive bass note on the piano, followed by Jens Thomas riffing in a higher key.

“That’s “Hell’s Bells…AC/DC…can‘t be…” I said to Ms jb.

Was, though and he interspersed “Touch too much” with throat-singing, falsetto interludes and playing the piano strings like a harp to match the reading.

Phenomenal stuff.
