Nothing compared with what it used to be like during the Cold War (and for more than a few years after the Wall came down), but there’s still an American military presence around here.
This sign’s at the back of the Layenhof (it basically says: Come in here and we’ll shoot you..), one of the conversion projects that metaphorically turns swords to ploughshares, once having been a military airfield with a large (now empty) housing area and now used as a training ground for urban warfare.
The other main presence is in the Mainz Sand Dunes, a nature reserve unique in northern Europe for its steppe vegetation and rare plants, but still used by the US Army under NATO statutes as a training area.
Now, just because you CAN doesn’t mean that you SHOULD carve ruts through the place with your tracked vehicles….
