Which was the day before yesterday and when we fronted up a hour after opening – pushing the mean age more than a few points to the right, our combined age exceeding that of the sum of everyone in the cafe – there were more folk than you could shake a stick at.

Queue out into the road, many there to hoover up the free bubbly and chocolate mousse I suspect, but worth the wait.

Vera Kirschbaum appears to have come to Mainz complete her Masters and hung around. Pulled shots during her studies, did marketing for a roastery and worked her way through Asia and Australia gaining experience.

Which shows.

In the middle of the Neustadt (new part of town, “new” being relative around these parts – think 150 years..) with a young hip neighbourhood, strong branding, clear messaging, good communication and a really good product with specialty beans from a local (but-not-Paul-Bonna’s) roastery and a cortado that puts many a local (but-not-Paul-Bonnas’..) barista to shame.

And an excellent non-vegan lemon cake. A huge chunk of.

And she comes across way nicer and more approachable that the (somewhat aloof) image that she projects on Instagram.

We’ve never been spoiled for choice when it comes to serious coffee in Mainz, but Kavé complicates decision-making
