The “Drei-Mädchen” fountain on the Ballplatz, suffering from severe dehydration.
The reason: No money. As usual.
Mainz has enormous debts – close to €1bn – and it costs €220,000 annually for water, maintenance and chemicals to operate the 60 fountains in the city.
So they shut down 56 of them.
(Fellow Mainz blogger at Mainz Images suggests a “Dry Fountain Walk of Fame/Shame” as a new tourist attraction…..)
No initiatives to garner corporate sponsorship.
No initiatives to get locals to adopt a fountain.
Just turn off the bloody water.
Corporates did leap up to be counted and the girls have now been re-fountainised.
But what a way to run a city……
Bummer.
City coffers just about everywhere are in economic trouble or so it seems. Glad that some of the corporates stepped up!
