Greenhough – #1634

Buying wine in New Zealand is a bit tricky, especially if you come from a traditional wine-growing region.

There aren’t many small vineyards where you get to meet the vintner and talk about his/her wine.

It’s mostly BIG BUSINESS, owned by someone overseas who has a marketing department that comes up with with fantasy names like Dolphin Ridge or Totara Cove and puts the same wine in differently labelled bottles and has different price points, depending on how prestigious the focus groups tell them the brand is.

So it’s refreshing to find the Greenhoughs in Hope.

They make hand-crafted wines, sell at local supermarkets and from the cellar door.

And are authentic.

Their tasting room is a treasure trove of local art.

Their floor is tiled with Steve Fullmer’s designs.

Going there (to Steve’s) tomorrow.

Dinner and All Blacks.

Beat that.
