Mary Whitehouse was a firebrand protectress of public morals in Britain in the 1960s and 70s – Sisyphus springs to mind… – and the Heunensäule on the market square in Mainz never fails to remind of this 2 line rhyme.

You’ll be disappointed to know that it has absolutely no phallic symbolism.

Mainz DOES have one of those, though – the Drusus Stone in the Citadelle.
