“Tied” for first place….

The Dionysos restaurant in the Germanikusstrasse  is generally accepted as being the best Greek restaurant in Mainz.

Tucked in behind the Kästrich and off the tourist track, you have to know it’s there.

Great food, good prices, the nicest people and a terrace shaded by trees with a view of the ruins of Bastion Martin, one of the linchpins of Mainz’s historic defensive fortifications.

Got chatting with the waiter about the fact that the Schöffenhofer Weissbier had its origins just around the corner in the brewery in Dreikönigshof.

“Oh” he said “This whole building still belongs to the Binding brewery (here’s the story from last week)  and we’re tied to them – can’t sell anything apart from their beverages.”

And if you’re interested in the origin of the name – Peter Schöffer was one of Gutenberg’s apprentices
