Lazio Roma is invariably a serious contender for championship honours in the Italian Serie A football league.

Mainz 05’s ambition – declared annually –  is just to stay in the German First Division.

Population of Rome? 2.7 million

Population of Mainz? Oh, around 200,000….

Says it all.

But in a pre-season test game last night in the old Bruchweg stadium (best tickets – €15), Mainz played them against the wall, despite Lazio having Miroslav Klose (local lad from Kaiserslautern and the top goal scorer ever in World Cup games) as captain.

Ended up 3:0

Who woulda thunk…..
